The Department is committed to giving our pupils the opportunity to experience a wide range of stimulating and relevant experiences within the department. Our hope is to develop pupil interest within the important fields of Design and Technology, and inspire the next generation of Designers and Engineers.
We are a hands-on department that looks to develop pupils through problem solving, communication skills, practical tasks, self-confidence, versatility and the ability to think laterally in coming up with new ideas. In the department pupils are engaged in a variety of ways of working, and can be working as part of a team, in a pair or individually, as they complete work in the department. Learning occurs through research, discussion, designing, development work, presentation, and evaluation.
Teaching & Learning
Teaching begins in S1 & S2 with pupils spending 1 hour a week in the department (course outlines are below), where they enhance and extend existing proficiency in designing and using technologies to design, make and promote. In S3 pupils can select to study Design & Manufacture, Graphic Communication and Practical Woodworking (course outlines below). In S5/6 Design & Manufacture and Graphic Communication can be studied up to and including Advanced Higher (course outlines below).
