English

Literacy is a vital part of every student’s journey. It empowers them to access knowledge, express ideas, engage confidently with the world around them and imagine the ones which don’t even exist yet.

The English faculty are committed to nurturing the literacy of every student. We recognise that each learner brings unique strengths, challenges, and preferences, and we strive to meet those needs with care, creativity, and ambition. Through inclusive teaching, high expectations, and a belief in every student’s potential, we aim to bring out the very best in each our learners from BGE to Advanced Higher.

To achieve this aspiration, we endeavour to foster a love of literature by exploring diverse voices, timeless classics, and contemporary texts that resonate with students’ lives. Then through discussion, drama, debate, and storytelling, we encourage learners to think critically, express themselves confidently, and engage with ideas that matter We also firmly believe in the importance of personal reading and encourage collaboration and challenge in the reading choices learners make as evidence shows this can really shape their success as learners and beyond.

Furthermore, giving power to students’ voices through writing is also an integral part of what we do. In writing, students may advocate for change in persuasive writing, explore their own experiences with insight or build worlds beyond our imaginations. It is our responsibility to provide students with the tools to do this clearly, accurately and effectively.

As students move forward — into further study, employment, or the wider world — we want our students to leave not just with strong literacy skills, but with confidence, curiosity, and the ability to think independently — qualities that will serve them well wherever life takes them. English is where stories shape us, voices find strength, and ideas become action — preparing every learner not just for exams, but for the world beyond.’
